Frequently Asked Questions

What is StoryStarter?

StoryStarter is a new gift-giving service. We create beautiful collaborative books that let people know how much they matter to their friends and family. Our books mix together photographs and text from the whole group - anecdotes, in-jokes, heartfelt tributes and more. It all comes together in one incredibly moving gift book.

Imagine everyone you know taking the time to sit down and say why they love you, or share their fondest memory with you. Pretty powerful stuff! That’s a book from StoryStarter.

StoryStarter customers also have the option of  commissioning a professional writer from Story Terrace, to create a full-length biography. To learn more about Story Terrace’s biography writing service visit www.storyterrace.com.

Where do I set up my page?

You can set up a StoryStarter page here.

I don't know what title to choose!

Don’t sweat it - you can pick something and change it later. Just keep it simple and choose something that everyone in the group will understand.

What should I add as a description?

This is the place for you to let everyone know what you’re up to. Just explain why you’re making the book! If you have any special requests or extra info for the group you can include it here.

What's the difference between the packages?

The StoryStarter gift book is our main product. It’s a hardcover book that you and your group create - it includes content the group adds to your Storystarter page - messages, photos and stories.

Our other packages include a seperate professionally written biography from Story Terrace. To learn more about what Story Terrace does, click here.

Should I choose self-funded or crowd-funded?

If you’d like to invite other people to help pay for the book, then select crowd-funded. If you just want to pay yourself, select self-funded.

When do I pay for the book?

You’ll need to pay for your book before it can go into production - so if you’re self-funding make sure you have paid before your content deadline. You can contact us with any questions.

Which privacy setting should I go for?

We recommend you choose ‘share with public link’. This means you can share the web address of your storystarter on social media, using your own e-mail address, via SMS or however you like, and people will be able to contribute. Your page still won’t show up in search engine results.

If you want to 100% guarantee that only people who have been sent an invite from StoryStarter can access your page, then choose ‘e-mail invitation only’.

I can't find the right cover photo

We recommend you choose ‘share with public link’. This means you can share the web address of your storystarter on social media, using your own e-mail address, via SMS or however you like, and people will be able to contribute. Your page still won’t show up in search engine results.

How do I edit my page's settings?

When you navigate to your StoryStarter page, you will find a button labelled “edit page”. Just click it and you’ll go back to the same screen you used to set up your page. If you click save, any changes you make will be applied to your page.

What can I do to make the book a success?

Here are a few tips!

  • If you haven’t already, we recommend you edit your page's description - so everyone has a good idea what the book is for.
  • It’s also a great idea to choose a cover image for your book. You can always change it!
  • Make sure you add some content to your page yourself (a message, a few photos, etc) so when people get there the ball is already rolling!

How do I invite people?

Once you’ve set up your page, you’ll see a button labelled ‘invite’. If you click it, you will be able to send email invites. The entry field accepts comma separated lists - so you can paste in multiple addresses, e.g. “john.doe@email.com, jane.doe@email.com, joe.bloggs@email.com,”

If you selected “share with public link” as your privacy setting, you can also send anyone you like the web address of your storystarter page.

You can send your own bulk emails, share on social media, by text, or just shout it from a nearby hilltop.

How do I add stories, messages and memories?

On the StoryStarter page, click ‘Share Story’ and type or paste in your text!

How much should I write?

There’s no hard-and-fast rule! A page in one of our books can fit around 260-300 words. We think each contribution looks best if it takes up at least a page - that could be a half page photo and 150 words, or just 260-300 words of text. But feel free to add more.

How do I add photos?

On the StoryStarter page, click ‘Add Photos’. You can click the ‘Upload Photos’ field that appears and browse your computer to find photos to upload. You can also just drag photos into the box.

Do I have to add the date and location to my contribution?

It’s optional - but it’s great information to add to the book and it also helps to organise all the content, so we recommend you add it where possible.

I’ve been invited to make a contribution, but I’m not sure where to start.

We hear ya. It’s natural to want to get it right. Don’t worry - here are a few prompts:

  • When did you first meet?
  • What are your favourite things about them?
  • Were you present at a special time in their life, or vice versa?
  • How have they helped you over the years?
  • What makes them unique?
  • Any embarrassing moments you’d like to bring up? (Remember other people will read this)
  • Have you got any great photographs of them?
  • How about some snaps of you together?

Remember - you can write more than one entry. You can also edit or delete your contributions before the campaign deadline. And try to add a picture or two to illustrate your contribution if you can!

What happens if there are too many stories and photos? Will they all get into the book?

There’s no limit to how many contributions your group can add to your StoryStarter page - but the maximum length book we can print is 300 pages. Most of our books are 50-100 pages long. If you’re worried yours is going to be too long, you can contact us.

What happens to content added after the deadline?

We can’t guarantee that anything added after the deadline will make it into the book, unfortunately. So try to make sure you make your contribution in time!

When do I pay for the book?

The book will need to be paid for before it can go into production.

If you’re paying for the book entirely yourself, just make sure you’ve paid before your content deadline, so you don’t encounter any delays.

If you’re crowdfunding - your group need to make their donations before the deadline too.

Which payment methods do you accept?

We accept payments via all major credit cards.

How do I pay?

If you’re paying for the book yourself, we will contact you before your content deadline. You can also get in touch with us at any time to pay.

If you are crowdfunding the book, you can pay by clicking ‘donate’ on your Storystarter page.

Is your payments system secure?

Yes - we use Stripe to process payments, which is a secure payments provider.

Why is there an option to add funds?

The StoryStarter page you are looking at has crowd funding enabled. This allows the whole group to help pay for the book. If you started the page, you can switch this off if you want to, by adjusting your page settings.

Why isn’t there an option to add funds?

The StoryStarter page you are looking at does not have crowd funding enabled. This means that the person who set up the page will be paying for the book themselves. Everyone else is just being asked to add content for the book.

How do I add funds?

Just click ‘donate’ on the StoryStarter page!

What if the group don’t hit the funding target?

If the group fails to reach the funding target, we can process refunds for everyone who has contributed.

What happens if the group exceed the funding target?

You can upgrade your package (for example by ordering extra copies), or request a refund of the difference.

Can everyone see how much I donate?

Not if you don’t want them to! You have the option of keeping the amount private.

How long will it take to deliver the book?

We deliver StoryStarter gift books within three weeks of the content deadline, providing the book has been paid for by that point.

How much do extra copies cost?

Extra copies cost £40 / €50 / $60.

How do I get extra copies?

We’re adding options for this. For the moment just contact us and we can sort it out for you!

How do I edit my account details?

Go to the top right of the page and log in to your account if you haven’t already. Once you’re in, you’ll see a menu item with your name appears in the same place. Select it, and click “my profile”. Make any changes you want to, and select save.

Who can see the content on my StoryStarter page?

It depends on your privacy settings. If you've chosen to share with a public link (recommended):

  • Anyone with the web address of your StoryStarter page can join your page, view content and contribute.
  • Your page will not show up in search engine results - so it’s very unlikely that anyone except the people you share the link with will see it.
  • You’ll be able to share the web address on social media, WhatsApp, SMS and more!

If you chose 'e-mail invitation only':

  • Only the people who have been sent an e-mail invite from StoryStarter and joined up can access the page.
  • You won’t be able to invite friends & family by sharing the page’s web address via social media, WhatsApp, SMS, etc.

Who can invite people to my StoryStarter page?

If you’ve chosen to share your page with a public link, anyone can invite people to contribute.

If you selected ‘Email Invitation Only’, anyone who has joined your page can send invites - but you’ll have to approve them before they go out.
